Brian Staton, vice president of Krill Systems is in Newport, OR where the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ship Bell M. Shimada is docked and ready for inspection for the installation of Krill Systems vessel operating systems. Michael Johnston, senior sales representative of Micromotion Emerson, is here to provide fuel sensor support for the installations.

The Bell M Shimada is the fourth in the class of new fisheries survey vessels (FSV) built for NOAA by VT Halter Marine. The state-of-the art research ship is capable of conducting a wide variety of fisheries and oceanographic research. It supports NOAA’s mission to protect, restore, and manage the use of living marine, coastal, and ocean resources. Bell M. Shimada‘s capability to conduct both fishing and oceanographic research is unique among research vessels.

The Bell M. Shimada is a stern trawler type vessel with capabilities matching those of the commercial trawler fleet. The ship can conduct trawling operations to depths of 1,800 meters. Smaller sampling nets and towed fishing gear can be deployed from various winches over the stern or starboard sampling station A-frames. Long-lining and trap fishing can also be accomplished. With a cruising speed of 12 knots and range of 12,000 nautical miles, the 40-day mission endurance is constrained only by provision storage space and fuel capacity.

Krill Systems announce that it has been selected by the Washington State Department of Transportation for fitting on the MV ‘Walla Walla’ operated by Washington State Ferries.

(Bainbridge Island, WA, Aug 11, 20011) Krill Systems Inc., a leader in advanced fuel and vessel monitoring systems, is pleased to announce that it has been selected  by the Washington State Department of Transportation for fitting on the MV ‘Walla Walla’ operated by Washington State Ferries.

MV Walla Walla is a Jumbo Class auto/passenger ferry measuring:  440ft LOA, 87ft beam, 18ft draft and is powered by four Diesel-Electric engines delivering 11,500hp.

Washington State Ferries’ decision recognized that fuel savings could be achieved by carefully analyzing fuel-burn and changing certain vessel operating practices without reducing the level of service provided to their customers. Krill Systems was selected as the company best able to deliver the results they were seeking.

Krill Systems uses Microsoft SQL server database technology to record on-board sensor data with 2 second resolution and storage capacity of at least one year. Any communication system including cellular internet access, supporting standard SMTP email protocols, may be used to transmit customizable reports and sensor data menus, in Excel format, to any location(s) that the information is needed.

Fuel-burn analysis obtained, so far, from the Krill system indicates that larger than expected fuel savings can be achieved with relatively small operating changes. In their continuing efforts to reduce operating costs to a minimum while still delivering world-class ferry services, Washington State Ferries sees Krill Systems, Inc. as an effective partner in their continuing efforts to reduce the cost of operating their diesel-powered fleet.

In a competitive bid, on an unrestricted basis, NOAA issued its award to ‘the responsible vendor whose quotation resulted in the best value to the Government, considering both price and non-price factors’. The factors used to evaluate the quotations were: Technical Approach, Past Performance and Price.

NOAA Fisheries Survey Vessels (FSV) is the most technologically advanced in the world and are deployed in the practical application of NOAA Fisheries mission statement. NOAA Fisheries is responsible for the management, conservation and protection of living marine resources within the United States Exclusive Economic Zone. NOAA Fisheries also plays a supportive and advisory role in the management of living marine resources in coastal areas under state jurisdiction, provides scientific and policy leadership in the international arena and implements international conservation and management measures as appropriate.
